Los Angeles is a like a Paint Factory for street artists.  With hundreds of artists producing high quality work, LA has had a dramatic influence on art throughout world.

This exhibition at Alta Lofts is in a building that was formerly used as the Fuller Paint Factory. This gritty and industrial neighborhood of historic Lincoln Heights is just east of downtown LA and the LA River. With many old factories and historic homes, this neighborhood is experiencing a rebirth.  It is a fitting spot to showcase some of the most inspirational and vibrant art that is being produced in Los Angeles today.

Featuring work on canvas by some of LA’s most influential young artists, this will be an important show for LA Street Art.

I.C.U. Art – In Creative Unity (ICU Art)

ICU Art is a West Coast art production company specializing in murals, art exhibitions and scenic design produced by graffiti artists.  Working with some of the most talented spray can artists, ICU Art first began curating large-scale graffiti art exhibitions in Los Angeles in 1993. As an advocate for street artists and muralists, ICU Art works as an intermediary between graffiti artist, muralists and various government agencies in an effort to defend the rights of artists to paint murals and express themselves. With artists in cities all around the United States, ICU Art designs and paints murals for a wide range of clients. Stash Maleski is the Director of ICU Art, and Jeanna Penn is Project Coordinator.

As the Curator of the Venice Art Walls, ICU Art issues free permits to artists to paint on the walls on weekends.  The Venice Art Walls is one of the nations most well known graffiti art parks and has been a legal graffiti art park since 2000.  Prior to that, the area was part of the Venice Pavilion as was know as the “Venice Graffiti Pit.”  Although it was illegal to paint on the walls prior to 2000, the area was a world renown graffiti yard for at least twenty-five year.  ICU Art helped to organize the effort to save the walls from removal in 1999, and was asked by the City of Los Angles to manage the site for the city.  ICU Art manages this non-profit program as a service to the graffiti artist of Los Angeles and the people of Venice. www.VeniceArtWalls.com

The time has come to see a collection up close and personal. I will be showing with a long time friend, Tazroc. It should be an awesome opening with close friends, scene-kids, b-boys, hipsters, flower children, Tom fools, indie-so-and-so’s, etc…. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Portland during the Artwalk. The final weeks are here. I have a a few more paintings to finish before I fly north. I’ll be ready. Hopefully you’ll be too.

The more popular street art has become, the more people seem to be facing off on key issues at the very core of the practice. I’m not thinking of just the recent MOCA saga, but of the flare-up that erupted in New York when graffiti artists “carried out a rude sneak attack on the godfather of their own scene” by tagging a Kenny Scharf mural, as reported by Art+Auction editor-at-large Judd Tully.

When does one person’s right to free speech begin to trample on another’s? Where does the line between artistic expression and vandalism get drawn, and who do we entrust to draw it?

Thursday night I will be moderating a Zocalo panel at The Fowler Museum at UCLA that takes a slightly different tack, exploring how street art “humanizes” cities.

The panel was organized to coincide with the final week of Larry Yust’s photography show at the Fowler, featuring panoramic shots of street art in Paris, Berlin and L.A. that fairly explode–or bloom–with color. The panelists are Fowler curator Patrick Polk, who organized the Yust show; independent curator Aaron Rose, who is helping organize the upcoming MOCA street art survey; and two of L.A.’s best-known muralists: Man One and Retna.

I can tell you there’s gonna be a bunch of beautiful females to look at.

A new collection of work will be on display at the Hold Up Gallery.

Los Angeles, CA, November 1st, 2010 – Room 13 LA, Hold Up Art Gallery, and Contemporary Art Start @ MOCA Present: THE GIFT OF ART, an unprecedented collaboration of students and LA’s best professional artists which includes a month long gallery show, art-related workshops and other events hosted by Hold Up Art, a gallery in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Los Angeles. The exhibit will feature art by Room 13 Foshay, LA; Bill Farroux; Chor Boogie; Ernesto Yerena; Kathia Dungplata; Magda Audifred; Mear One; Pep Williams; Philip Lumbang; Shark Toof; Steven Lopez; and Timoi. Make your own art: weekly hands-on workshops, taught by industry professionals will be fun and informative for all ages!  Other evening events will be added throughout the month. All funds raised will go to support Room 13 LA’s student managed and financed, sustainable, multi-media studio at Foshay Middle School in South Central Los Angeles.

About ROOM 13 LA:

Room 13 LA is a student managed and financed, multi-media studio at James A. Foshay Learning Center, a public school in South Central Los Angeles. 170+ student artists (ages 10-18) share the studio with a professional fine artist, Kathia Dungplata –hired as Artist-in-Residence by the students. The studio serves as an incubator for original, creative learning and problem solving; it is a place where professional artists can inspire and mentor young artists while at the same time getting re-energized by the young artists’ creativity. Room 13 is a successful model for art programs in this time of reduced funding. I will have a solo show at the Krate next month. It’s only a couple of weeks away.

I’ll be part of a group show in Uptown Whittier tomorrow. I will be doing some art there as well. The gallery theme revolves around music and I will be showing the After Midnight Amerykahn Promise painting. I guess the whole street will be having fun and there should be a big turn out.

Back in November I talked about a painting I did for Dj Drez. As I have learned time and time again… it takes time for things to incubate. After months of hard work the album is wrapped up and ready for the people. I designed the entire Album package… so if you see any secret Jahta Beat paraphernalia; that stuff came from me.

Tonight is the official album release party at Zanzibar in Santa Monica. The music group, Afro Funke´will perform along with a few musicians from Jahta Beat Album. I’ll be painting live as the evening starts and ends and you’ll be able to see the original artwork in person.

Here is a time lapse in a much larger arena. I worked on this for about 10 hours; over a 3 day period. Enjoy:
