my good friend TazRoc on Conan O'brien »

success is based upon my vision to see that others are on their path of success. My friend Tazroc had his artwork showcased on the Conan O’Brien show. That’s the second part. The first part was that; his work was shown on the Snoop Dogg’s lowrider “showtime”. Let me repeat that. Taz painted on Snoop Dogg’s car. Snoop Dogg had his car on Conan’s show and they are strictly talking about the art!

Pay a visit to his site and check out what he is up to.

After MIdnight news »

Some good news went down last week. I talked with India.Arie’s people and it looks like they are on board with the limited edition prints. When this goes through, that will be 2 singers for the After Midnight series…. and we’re not finished!

Artworks magazine interview »

Editor and writer Ben Bamsey did an interview with me for Art Works Magazine. Read on:

Art is in his blood. Music is in his soul. Giving back is in his nature. And Steven Lopez just found the valve that taps all three.  The energy rushing out of that floodgate has put the swing in his song and passion in his painting. It’s produced his most prolific series to date, afforded him spirit-nurturing opportunities to help others and, most importantly, finally made him comfortable in his own skin.

“I can never get this project off my mind. I think about it all the time,” Lopez beams inside his Pasadena studio. He’s referring to his After Midnight series – a body of work featuring the R&B and soul singers that have given him his groove over the years… musicians like Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner and Chaka Khan. After studying their photo archives, discography and live performances, Lopez gives their images and messages new meaning on canvas. Working fast and full of purpose in a sleeveless shirt, the southpaw begins with a base of yellow. “I just gravitate to that color,” he says. “The yellow gives the art its energy.” Purple is the perfect compliment according to Lopez. He slaps it on creating neon-looking outlines of familiar faces. Features and expressions then become accentuated as he digs deeper into his palette, defines shape and shadow and gives the subjects their voice. Along the way, he adds words from his favorite songs to the borders like “Strength, Courage and Wisdom” on his India.Arie portrait… “The song helps me reflect on my own hardships and rising above.” Read more…

group show »

I’ll be part of a group show in Uptown Whittier tomorrow. I will be doing some art there as well. The gallery theme revolves around music and I will be showing the After Midnight Amerykahn Promise painting. I guess the whole street will be having fun and there should be a big turn out.

09 'til infinity »

The group, Souls of Mischief have asked me to paint their album cover, “Montezuma’s Revenge”. Their album, 93 ’til inifinity… was a bench mark and a gem in the Hip Hop culture. I went to Oakland last month and got the chance to hang out with the crew. This new album has another hidden gem… Prince Paul ( De La Soul, Handsome boy modeling school) produced their tracks. Tajai, hit me off with the music and I’m really feeling the cuts. The background of the album will be filled but all I need is the core to start off. I will be finishing this painting hopefully by the end of the week. montage001

The blueprint »

I have another painting in the mix. Here’s the start of the idea. I’ve become real attached to the Queztal bird so I chose to have it in this one, too. I should also mention that I’ve been on big MJ trip… take what you will from it… but that music has some energy. Blame it on a boogie!

New painting »

Greetings people. I’ve been working on this for the past month and I finally finished it last week. The painting is 40″x30″ and is titled, “Where she walks is the beginning. Where she looks is the sign of the past”. I really enjoyed working on this because I knew that a story was going to develop… and for some of you guys, you know how much I like to tell stories. So let’s see what we have here; a quetzal and crow in foreground. Quetzalcoatl is in the background and then my Alert goddess in the center of it all. I already know what is going on but I would like for you people to draw your own conclusions.

I have 3 more paintings in progress as I’m getting closer to my solo show in Santa Cruz. The series for this one is getting me hyped as I’m starting to see a broader context of this style and circumstance.
