I Keep Moving

In Oregon… »

There is so much going on. I’ve been talking to a few people about a project that I’m really excited about. Once everything is order and the ink is dry I will tell you what’s going down. I’m surviving on 5 hours of sleep the 2 days as I was putting everything in order to make the trip here to Oregon. My solo show will begin next week on the 5th. Tomorrow I will be heading up to downtown Portland for the Apple Juice Crew Jam:

I’ll be painting there along with my Portland-based friend Ashley Montague. He does, as you say, “putting in work”.

The Juice Jam is a FREE all day, all ages annual hip hop event that the APPLE JUICE CREW organizes.
It features lots of DJs, MCs, a live graffiti wall and open b/boy & b/girl cyphers among other original hip hop culture elements.
We throw it in the heart of downtown Portland at a concrete park called O’Bryant Square.
Our goal is to present a positive outdoor hip hop jam that’s completely free to the public.
Last year, we had hundreds of people come out to support and this year we’re doing it even bigger.
We’re doing this event also as a benefit to raise awareness for and support
the Hip Hop Elements program of the Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls.
This is a program to educate girls ages 8-18 on the elements of hip hop: Emceeing, DJing, B/Girling, and Graffiti Art.
Because the event is non-profit, the Apple Juice Crew is only able to fund this event through the support we get from our sponsors and the money we generate from fundraisers that you support.n ore

Press Release: Steven Lopez solo show at Fenario gallery, Eugene Or. »

For: September 5th, 2008, Eugene Oregon
ARTICLE LINK

Fenario Gallery is proud to present the solo exhibit of former Oregon resident, Steven Lopez for September 2008. The show will feature over 25 paintings as well as a mural installation funded by the Lane Arts Council.

Based in Eugene Oregon, the Fenario gallery is an ever-evolving space conceptualized as a safe haven for new ideas, fresh perspectives, and art that doesn’t simply rely on the lessons of the past, but moves forward. Examples of this philosophy have included internationally renowned artists, Mark Hanson and Robert Venosa. Lopez stated, “ I feel honored to be part of an ever growing list of talented individuals to show at Fenario”.

Gallery coordinator, Chloe Gallagher said, “Steven has made a large and lasting impression on the Eugene art community and we at Fenario are very excited to have him back in town”. Lopez was instrumental in leading the 2000 Lane Arts Council project ArtWall, in which he mentored and guided a group of local youths in the design and execution of a downtown mural.

The opening reception will be on September 5th. The reception will act as the grand unveiling of Steven’s publicly funded installation piece, and will feature a performance by premier North West DJ Matt Nelkin, as well as refreshments and a question and answer session with the artist. On September 9th we will also be hosting a public forum about the importance of public art and Steven’s continued work with youth through art since his involvement in the ArtWall project.

Modular Transformation »

I wrote this a couple of nights ago as the basis for my solo showing coming up next month:

The past 4 years have been the greatest transformational experiences in my life. When I finally had to face all things that I pushed away; I was forced to deconstruct my purpose, ego and pride. With my eyes finally seeing beyond the 3rd dimension, I was hit with the vision that I was everything I thought I wasn’t. I had to transform my spite and regret into gifts of enlightenment or I would cease to grow. During this process I approached my art from a new angle.

I had to start with the basic concepts of form. Simple shapes produce complex mass. But this complexity is an illussion. Beneath the skin resides the life spirit that binds and destroys our world. Without the spirit we are nothing more than mass consuming space. Painting the body in many shapes lead me to the conclusion that our body was created as a module. A unit to deliver us into the higher or lower dimension.

Beneath our flesh resides the geometry of life: mass, frequency and spirit. It is the triangle for concscious energy. My work is a document of my progression from self, you and the community.
