I Keep Moving

project update »

I started a new project with Technine snowboards. This will be my third season working with them. They are really carving a nitch within the industry. They give me a lot of freedom to work on the board graphics. There is already one board out for this season and the next graphics will be released to the public around september of this year. The graphics that I’m working on right now will be released for the 09-10 season. There will be more information as the due date approaches (which is usually around June and July).

The time is near »

Okay. Progress has been made last week. The kids have finally warmed up to me and I think I owe it all to Judy Baca. I showed the kids the “Los Angeles Mural” and they nearly flipped their lid. Out of all the artwork that i have shown to them; they were able to relate and finally got a little fire going in their heads. This next week we will be putting sketches together for the first time and I will be able to post the progress of the art.

I had an awesome time talking to one of the students who felt a need to start a group to help people. We spent some time talking about his idea. He felt a little weird talking about because he didn’t know whether or not I would think strange of him. I was almost taken back by that because I thought to myself how sad it is in this day in age for an impressionable youth to feel that he can’t share his love to help people. I guess when it’s not the coolest thing on TV….I can understand. He asked me to join his group and he was surprised when I said yes. What was I going to say?!?! NO MAN I’M NOT DOWN FOR LOVE?…I had to remind him that’s the biggest revolution in today’s world.. l-o-v-e.

spread it around.

INTO THE 4TH WEEK »

Where should I start? There’s a lot going on here guys. I’ve got kids that come in one week and then I don’t see them again. And then there are the new ones that I don’t know where to start with. First order of business: The students do not want to learn art history. It’s boring to them. If I was in there shoes I would feel the same way. From here on out I need to make it hands on right from the get go. I’m going to keep the history light.

It was extra tough this time around because some of the kids had a movie going on in their heads and I was just part of their supporting cast. There were lots of arguments happening with the teachers and students in my third and final class. When I walked in there was fresh cup-o-noodle spilled on the floor. Apparently one of the new students had their own agenda and everybody else didn’t care for it. I thought I was going to be part of their fiasco but I was spared the hollywood drama. It was tough to keep my students attention when I have one reading her own script. I think it was her autobiography and she was playing her biggest fan to herself =)  I’m really concerned with how many of them are going to be into building this mural. Two of the kids that like to draw are going to be transferring by the end of this month. And the other kids, well…I have to see what happens. If they can visualize something for me to grasp on I can make something work. I did have a break through with them. I did get them to understand elements of foreground and background. One of the kids who swore he didn’t know how to draw was able to build a scene on a thumbnail sketch. And that’s what I was trying to teach too….don’t be concerned with the picture having to look nice. Get the idea out and tell me the story… my own mind will put the pieces together.

I was happy that they understood that. From what I have gathered so far: My first has some colorful students very divers and so are there attitudes, they routinely show up for class but I hear there are more that are supposed to be there. My second class seem to be the most cooperative. My third class…. boy…. that’s the tough one. There has only been constant person there; There are too many variables to mention. This whole project is about variables! I did talk to my other teacher who is working with the junior high class. I believe she is more impressionable to them then I’m to my kids (what a difference a couple of years make). We are going to have put notes together and see what kind of plan we have next. Wish me good luck.
